Miss Clara Marshall Marries Srgt. Robert Whitney in Alfred

At a candle-light service in the century-old Congregational Church in Alfred Village, Miss Clara Allen Marshall of Alfred and Hartford, Conn., became the bride on New Year's Day of Sergt. Robert Sherwood Whitney, USA, of Governor's Island, N.Y.   Tall white candles in silver and gilt candelabra against a background of fir trees, in the chancel, and rows of white candles in the windows lighted the church.  The Rev. Charles L. Stevens read the double ring service, and Mrs. Arthur A. Gould of Alfred played the wedding music.

The bride was gowned in white satin and lace, en train, and her veil fell from a a cap of Venice lace.  Her bouquet was white roses and gardenias.  The maid of honor, Miss Frances Wallace of Hartford, wore Fuchsia chiffon over taffeta, and the bridesmaids, Mrs. Woodrow Lodding of Worcester, Mass., and Miss Ruth Barlow of Hartford, delphinium blue lace and chiffon.  All wore veils of fuchsia net, and carried fuchsia muffs with gardenias.  William H. Bolster of Nashua, N.H. was best man, and Ensign Donald W. Alexander  of Nashua, and Woodrow Lodding of Worcester ushered.  The flower girl, Ann Lane Marshall, niece of the bride, wore a rose taffeta frock and carried pink rosebuds.  The bride's uncle, Walter L. Dolley of Limerick, gave her in marriage.

The bride's mother, Mrs. Sumner B. Marshall, wore Persian blue, with gardenia corsage, and the bridegroom's mother, Mrs. Elliot W. Whitney of Nashua, was gowned in black, with sequined trimming.

Evergreens and fresh flowers decorated the John Holmes house, residence of the bride's mother, where the reception was held following the ceremony.  Mrs. John J. Sinnett of Bangor had charge of the guest book.

Mr. and Mrs. Whitney, after a short wedding trip, will reside in Hartford, where they have taken an apartment.  The bride chose for travelling pale green, with luggage tan accessories.

Mrs. Whitney, daughter of the late Dr. Sumner D. Marshall and Mrs. Marshall, is employed in the offices of the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company.  She is a graduate of the Alfred High School and the Posse-Nissen School at Kendall Green, Mass., to which she transferred from Bates College.  For about five years she was physical director at the Young Women's Christian Association in Newburyport, Mass.  Sergeant Whitney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elliott W. Whitney of Nashua, N.H., is a graduate of the Nashua High School and the Nichols Junior College in Webster, Mass., and was employed in the Nashua Trust Company before entering the U.S. Army in 1941.
